Juicy Fruit explores Caribbean culture through food, traditions, and energy. This is a celebration of how Caribbean culture overlaps with the rest of the African diaspora and other cultures. It is insightful to see how differently we name, prepare, and devour each fruit and the different ways we celebrate carnival.
The artwork depicts uplifting images of Caribbean culture, challenging negative narratives about corruption, poverty, and hypersexuality with narratives that highlight the culture's positive attributes and richness. This is shown through the use of gold and bright colors embodying cultural pride and the radiant vibe of the Caribbean. The texture and high-gloss finishes reflect the vibrancy of our festivities and the lushness of our land, inviting you to feel the spirit of the Caribbean with your eyes.
Through this series, you are personally invited to linger within each scene and view every stroke not just as a depiction of home, or each fruit as something to eat, but as a living, breathing pulse of Caribbean identity that connects us across the diaspora.
Dominique Dorvil is a first-generation Haitian-American, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She graduated from Pratt Institute with an M.S in Design. Her family's artistic lineage provides her with a rich heritage from which she draws inspiration and strength: Dorvil’s grandfather's paintings and murals depicting Haitian life and father's culinary artistry have all contributed to how she investigates themes of cultural identity, heritage, self-perception, and the diaspora which are grounded in her experience as a young Caribbean-American woman. Professionally trained as a realist artist, she is now experimenting with blending realism, abstraction and textural approaches to make art less about being perfect and more about being REAL.
